November Blogger Bundle – Sandra Walker, MMM! Quilts

Good morning everyone! You are in for such a treat today. I am so excited to share the November Blogger Bundle with you. This is the eleventh and final bundle for the year. In a grand finale sort of way, this bundle has it all. Saturated jewel tones, florals and plaids, the magic of BariJ and the sweet fantasy of Bethan Janine. But I am wayyyy ahead of myself. First let’s meet the curator of this very special collection.

Sandra Walker is the blogger behind, Musings of a Menopausal Melon, or MMM! Quilts. I remember specifically clicking through to her blog after seeing the title somewhere in this blogging world (how could I not, with a title like that!?!) I also remember she and I mentioning we were the same age (basically?) and both newly retired and trying out this blogging thing. It is one of those things where you chat with someone and just hit off right away. A few things I love about Sandra – her energy appears to be boundless, she is genuine and I can say this without ever having met her in person. But her blog posts are the real deal. Sandra is passionate and sometimes feels the hurts in the world almost too intensely. She is a wife, former teacher, mom and grandma to a sweet little guy as well as blogger, quilter, pattern designer and Island Batik Ambassador – Yikes!!!. She is into yoga and will share a blog post describing a good pose or stretch now and then. I love those posts. She has been designing patterns for a while now and has them available on both Etsy and Craftsy. The November Blogger Bundle.

Back to the bundle now! By starting with the two pieces from Virtuosa by BariJ, Sandra developed a dramatic feel with this bundle. She then added the mustard yellow piece from Boho Meadow by Bethan Janine which was really interesting to me. The BariJ fabrics are so feminine and there is a definite boho southwest vibe to the dark yellow piece. But you know what? It works. The yellow now popped on the Cinese Mystery floral and those bits of turquoise in the Boho Meadow fabric became that much brighter! Pulling in the plum and the sandy off-white tone on tones was an easy move after that. It was the blue that was challenging. Sandra looked at many blue pieces in the shop and when the blue plaid was suggested, we both knew it was perfect. It has just the right dark and light blue hues to work with both the BariJ prints. Such a great bundle!!

Bonjour Quilts and the Cost of Designing Patterns

I have long been a follower of Kirsty Cleverly, owner, pattern designer, blogger at Bonjour Quilts. (And for a quilt pattern designer and maker, isn’t her last name just awesome???) I think I first found Kirsty a while ago when there was a movement called May is for Makers to support indie pattern designers. I remember I bought her Fleur pattern at that time (which I have yet to even use, sigh.) After that, I started to read her blog and eventually signed up for her newsletter. In return for signing up, she gave me a great pattern called When You Wish. I did make this one though! The pattern is now available in larger sizes and is called Color Explosion.

Since then I purchased the larger version of the pattern and look forward to making it as a queen size.

OK – I am getting off topic. What I really want to talk about is this incredible post Kirsty recently wrote discussing the costs of bringing quilt patterns to print and then selling them – both privately, through quilt shops and through large scale distributors. Kirsty had posed a few questions in a recent newsletter, gathering information from her (13,000+) readers. I thought it was an interesting topic and as such, responded to her and we had a nice exchange about it. The resulting blog post is compelling. I love interacting with and supporting our indie pattern designers in the quilt community but have to say, I didn’t know the extent of the costs of running such a business. I really, really (!) hope you will click over and read Kirsty’s post as it applies to so many designers who provide both free and paid patterns. One aspect of the post that I was surprised by was the discussion around pricing PDF and print patterns at the same price. I suspect you will find it really interesting. Another part of the article I greatly appreciated was her list of suggested ways to support indie designers. There are ideas listed which are easily done.

Fleur, Triangle Twist, Go West, and Diamonds in the Deep, by Bonjour Quilts

As a small business owner, this article was very helpful to me. I carry a couple of Kirsty’s quilt patterns in my shop right now. I buy these patterns via a distributor because of the high shipping expense that I would incur if I bought from Kirsty directly (she lives in Australia). But I had not given thought to how this affects her revenue as a designer. Maybe someday the postage will work out such that I can buy from the designer but for now, it wouldn’t make sense. At this time, you will find Diamonds in the Deep and Triangle Twist available in the shop. In another week, I will also have Fleur (mini quilt version) and Go West. I am proud to carry Kirsty’s work as the aesthetic is wonderful, her quilts are not ones that will take forever to make, and the instructions are easily understood.

Happy Birthday Sale!

Today I celebrate my 58th birthday – how that has come to be, I cannot explain. Isn’t time the strangest phenomenon? The older I get, the more quickly it buzzes by. When I was young I would wish for the next age or stage. In seventh grade my mother allowed us to begin shaving our legs and wearing panty hose. At 12 or 13 (?) we were allowed to get our ears pierced. Of course there is driving at 16, a very exciting rite of passage and voting at 18 (are we all voting in the upcoming election??). I married at 20 (to my first husband); graduated college at 21, had my babies at 24, 26, and 30. Married again at 37 and had baby number 4 at age 40. Now I just want it to SLOW DOWN!!!! But it doesn’t, does it?

So, today I am celebrating! It is the 25th of the month so I am holding a site-wide 25% off sale! Not only that, I would like to give a $25 gift certificate to my shop! Please leave me a comment with an age related memory. What comes to mind? I will draw a winner tomorrow morning!

October Blogger Bundle with Kim Lapacek

Over the past several weeks, I have had the pleasure of working with Kim Lapacek. She is the curator of the October Blogger Bundle! Just in case you are not familiar with Kim, she is a talented quilter who blogs at Persimon Dreams. She is also a wife, mom to three sweet girls, business owner (Lapacek’s Orchard) and all around crafter. Kim designs patterns, speaks and teaches on occasion, makes incredible quilts, and she is the creative force behind Project Quilting. Knowing how busy Kim is, I was tickled to see the photo she provided for the blogger bundle graphic. In the car, driving her girls somewhere, sporting cute sunglasses – this is the perfect picture of Kim!

I remember “meeting” Kim when I won a giveaway on someone’s blog (I can’t remember whose blog though). I was given an opportunity to choose a pattern and I selected Kim’s Dresden Neighborhood pattern. I love the pattern and have really enjoyed seeing so many iterations of it made by other quilters even if I haven’t yet made one! I was so happy when Kim wanted to curate a bundle for me. Her bold use of color is her signature style and I was excited to see her choices. Let’s take a look!

October Blogger Bundle!

Kim’s bundle has a warm autumn theme to it with the darker burgundy and navy blue tones in it. Including the Catching Dreams (feathers) and the Afternoon With Deer prints created a really warm feel to the collection. For me, the surprising elements that Kim added are the two gorgeous, modern prints by Keiko Goke, Sashiko and Poppy. I love this line – it is probably one of my favorite lines in the shop – but not one I would think to put with the deer fabric. That is how Kim rolls; bold prints and great color combinations. She created a block with these fabrics to show how they can be used together. Hop over to her blog to see the block and take advantage of the tutorial she created for it.

September Blogger Bundle with Mari Heidt

Hi Everyone! As promised during my last post, today I am releasing the September Blogger Bundle. Everyone seems to be so happy to see a bit of cooler weather as summer winds down and autumn begins. I was very happy when Mari Heidt of The Academic Quilter agreed to curate the collection for September. Mari and I have communicated on-line since I first began blogging. (I think she started her blog just before I started mine). We worked together on different projects ever since and even got to meet in person during a vacation I had in Maine a couple of years ago. Mari generously traveled to Maine (she has a daughter thereabouts) and we spent a really fun afternoon together. Nothing better than finally meeting in person! Anyway, besides being a fantastic quilter, Mari is a college professor, wife, mom and grandma. If you are not familiar with her work, Mari does a lot of traditional blocks, loves scrappy quilting, and she designs great quilt alongs (block of the month) each year. Be sure to check out her blog!

Let’s take a look at the bundle for this month! A combination of florals, tone on tones, and a geometric print complete the bundle.

September Blogger Bundle, Curated by Mari Heidt

Included in the collection are fabrics from Art Gallery Fabric (the yellow daisies, the green floral and the pink geometric print) as well as from Windham Fabric (the orange tone on tone and the multi-color floral. with hidden kitties) and finally a vivid purple blender from P&B Textiles. They look so great together (though if you would like yardage of any one of them, they are all available in the shop). I think Mari knocked this one out of the park. She has a project started with the bundle and the blocks look great. Click here to take a look.

When I look at this bundle, I think of the flowers that bloom in the fall. By the end of summer, my garden is always very dry and looks stressed. But when the nights finally cool off, I have a large bed of chrysanthemums that bloom. It always makes me so happy to have these flowers blooming – they are the last blooms we have until the daffodils pop up at the end of February. The colors of the bundle are quite saturated and that depth of color reminds me of the mums that will soon be blooming in the yard. I can’t wait!

Special Pattern Sale, From My Carolina Home

This week I have enjoyed promoting the August Blogger Bundle curated by Carole Carter of From My Carolina Home. It has been such a successful bundle. Maybe with all the kids going back to school, we have that feeling of summer winding down, knowing the cooler weather of autumn is just around the corner and these colors were extra appealing to us? I am not sure but this bundle is by far the most popular of the blogger bundles this year. It might also be that Carole captured everyone’s attention with her gorgeous placemats and the related tutorial she kindly shared with everyone. Maybe it is the improv table topper she has promised to share with us. (She is sharing it over on her blog today – the photo above shows a scrappy binding which leaves me wanting to see more). Or is it the teaser she left about a tablescape with the placemats she intends to share on Monday. She has done her magic with this bundle of fat quarters!

It turns out that one of Carole’s readers mentioned she was buying the bundle to make a quilt with. Of course, this got Carole’s wheels turning. (She is always up to something creative!).

After hearing this plan from her reader, Carole thought of the patterns she has designed and which of them were most suited to this bundle. They are both really pretty quilts which one could make entirely with scraps and a background fabric. Take a look at the quilt made with her pattern called Scrap Dance. It is just gorgeous and with the fabrics in this blogger bundle it would be perfect for the fall season. Made entirely with HST’s and squares, the piecing does not seem terribly complicated. You know me, I don’t do complicated. 🙂

This is Scrap Dance Tango. The version shown in the pictures is quite scrappy but again, with the bundle you would have a very pretty, autumn inspired quilt. With this quilt, she shows a scrappy low volume background which is lovely.

Here is the thing – the blogger bundles were quite popular so there are only a few left. They are on sale through the end of the day, while supplies last. If you decide to give this a go, hop over and grab a bundle. I do have a limited amount of the golden textured solid which would be a pretty background fabric. It is the floral that will be the limiting factor for the bundles.

Maybe you already bought a bundle over the past several days? If you didn’t know exactly how you planned to use it, I would encourage you to take a closer look at both of these patterns. One thing I appreciate about Carole’s patterns is that she includes so many options for the size of the project. Maybe you just want to make a table topper or wall hanging? There is also the choice of baby quilt, lap quilt or twin size bed quilt. It is totally up to the maker! So which one appeals to you most? I have to say, I am leaning heavily toward the Scrap Dance pattern. I just love the look of the secondary patterns created with this pattern. July Blogger Bundle with Kim Soper

It is time for another Blogger Bundle and I am so excited to share it with you! The July bundle was curated by Kim Soper of Leland Ave Studios. Kim is an award-winning modern quilter, a blogger as well as being a stay at home mom to three boys. Once an attorney, she decided to stay home to raise her boys and like many of us, she looked to sewing to fulfill her creative need. Kim’s “about me” page is great and I encourage you to take a minute and read it, if you haven’t already. I especially like the part about how she came to name her business Leland Ave Studios.

You might know Kim from her Mr. Lincoln quilt which was awarded People’s Choice at the 2017 Quilt Con. That is how I first became aware of Kim and her work. I’d like to share the blurb she wrote when she submitted this quilt:

This quilt (passion project!) developed out of a desire to create an entirely improv-pieced, recognizable image without use of template, paper-piecing or applique. Using an iconic image of Lincoln that had been converted to WPAP (vector-based geometric pop art) by Ihsan Ekaputra, it was constructed using 6-inch blocks. The backing fabric is a repeating pattern of the original image of Lincoln. The binding is a nod to the vector-style of art on which the quilt is based. The end result is a quilt that is both identifiable as the intended image, and distinctly my own.

Following that, I began following her to read the weekly interviews she has been posting since the beginning of 2018 in The Creativity Project. Oh my gosh – talk about a dose of weekly inspiration. The series is wonderful and while I have enjoyed reading interviews with creatives I am already familiar with, I have really loved meeting many whom I hadn’t been familiar with. I am grateful for the work Kim has done to create this weekly series.

Suffice it to say, Kim is a huge inspiration to many in the quilting and creative community. I was so happy when she agreed to participate in my Blogger Bundle series this year. Want to see the bundle she curated?

Kim wanted a modern collection that had a summer vibe. I think she definitely got it! Both of the florals are from a new collection called Indigo & Aster by BariJ. She pulled in more fuchsia with the piece on the far left from Alison Glass’ 76 collection. To keep it bright and summery, Kim added Squared Elements in Mandarin, from Art Gallery Fabric. Finally, she chose a neutral and added the black and white polka dot made by Red Rooster Fabric. This might be my favorite move on Kim’s part. It moves the collection away from the femininity of the floral and adds whimsy to the bundle.

Once again, I have so enjoyed working with a quilt artist and seeing how she gathers fabrics from various lines in my shop and uses them together. Kim made a really cool, non-quilty, project with this bundle. Head on over to see what she made. I just love it!

June Blogger Bundle with Paige Alexander

Here we are in the last half of June – this means it is time for the blogger bundle of the month! If you are reading about these bundles for the first time, I started this project in January. Read about them here and here. The previous blogger bundles will be available in my shop through the end of 2018 – it is really fun to look at the variety of fabrics others have curated into collections. The bundle for June was curated by Paige Alexander of Quilted Blooms. I cannot remember exactly how I learned of Paige’s blog but I do know I have read her posts since the very first one. I believe a blogger (maybe Cheryl Brickey?) introduced the me to Paige and suggested I check out her work. I did so and never left! Paige’s style is very modern and also relatable. I am not sure if that is the correct word but I love her work because I understand it. Her quilts are meticulous, clean and very effective.

Above is Paige’s Cursive quilt, She made this about two years ago and it has been juried into several shows and won several ribbons. It is one of my favorite quilts she has made. Partly because she constructed the background, quilted it and then did the appliqué. Look closely and you will see she quilted line after line of the alphabet in cursive. This was a genius technique. I really encourage you to check out her work if you are not yet familiar with it.

June Blogger Bundle

On to the bundle! Paige selected a grouping of summery pieces that all hail from Windham Fabric. As we head into summer, this fresh palette of green, orange, yellow and pink are akin to a bouquet of flowers. She chose pieces that are really cheerful and bright – I love each one of them!

I think this bundle would be excellent used together in a project or added to your stash to give it a bright pick-me-up! Paige has been working on a piece with these fabrics and I am really excited to check it out – I had a sneak peek a few weeks ago and it is going to be really pretty! While the project is not yet finished, Paige is sharing her progress with us today. Make sure to take a look!

May Blogger Bundle with Jayne Willis

Today I am going to share a cheerful bundle curated by Jayne Willis of Twiggy & Opal. Before I jump into that though, let me introduce Jayne. Actually she likely needs no introduction because I suspect you are already familiar with her spectacular modern quilts. I am not sure exactly how Jayne and I became friends but we have been following each other’s blogs for quite a long time. She was one of the team of bloggers who supported the opening of my shop about 18 months ago, which was such a nice thing for her to do.

When I think about Jayne’s work, I am really impressed by her improvisational work, the clean lines she uses when she designs a piece, the quilting she does, and the determination she shows from start to finish on a project. I love following along on Instagram as she creates something. She often shows progress shots and the finished project never ceases to amaze me. She is really a talented quilt artist. I grabbed a quote from her About Me page on her blog that says it well. “My process may be a little unconventional—I let the fabric speak to me and rarely know where a design will take me from start to finish!”

OK, let’s take a look at the bundle she curated. I was not at all surprised to see Jayne select black, white and brights for her bundle. She is the queen of color and she uses it well. What did surprise me was how well the the blues in Flourish and Rainbow Vines (both made by Andover) worked together. Just look at the darker blue leaf on Rainbow Vines – – it is nearly identical to the background blue of Flourish. These details are what make Jayne’s pull attractive! I also love that by including the Rainbow Vines fabric, she chose a bright print that has a strong black accent.

Adding Panda Patches and the Basic Circles , Jayne pulled the bundle together – sort of like highlighting the whole collection with black. Next Jayne selected two soft yellow prints which added a burst of spring to the bundle.

Fabric Kits for Fire Burst Mystery QAL

Remember last week when I mentioned I had never done a mystery quilt along? It was in the post about the April blogger bundle curated by Cheryl Brickey. I said that mystery quilts made me nervous since I didn’t get to see the overall pattern for the quilt. Well I am making progress! I am involved in the new Fire Burst Mystery Quiltalong hosted by Tish Stemple.

However I should explain. Tish took the mystery out of it for me when she asked me to curate two different kits of fabric for the event. She had a few readers mentioning to her how picking the fabrics was a challenge for them, not knowing what the quilt was to look like. She thought offering a few kits might appease the nerves of some of the participants. This sounded like a lot of fun for me so I got to work.

With lots of emailing back and forth between Tish and I (or is it me??) there are now two different kits available in the shop for the event! I really like them both. I created each one to be quite different from the other so the color choices would appeal to a wide variety of taste.

The first one! This kit appeals to me with the jewel tones standing out most. The dark blue and fuschia fabrics are from the 76 line by Alison Glass. Along with those, are two fabrics from Amy Gibon’s Meriwether line made by Windham Fabrics.

I set up the kit so that the background fabric is the creamy off-white print with the little stars. The floral is also from that line and it looks great with the Alison Glass fabrics. So this kit is as follows:

Background Fabric: Twinkle Farmhouse by Amy Gibson (the creamy off-white stars)
Fabric 1: Stitched in Violet by Alison Glass (the dark fuchsia)

Kit number two is quite different. For this one, I selected a subtle print for the background. Called Dancing Daisies, it is from the Camping collection by Art Gallery Fabric. I really like the pale green, soft little daisies and the pop of orange in the center of each flower.

Because I used a print as the background, I stayed with solids for the other three fabrics. Drawing from the colors of the print, I chose three pieces from Art Gallery’s Pure Elements solid fabrics. I love both shades of orange and how the daisy centers are enhanced by them. I think this is a really pleasing but bold combination.

I have to say, this was such a fun project. I am trying to decide which kit I will use when I sew along with this, my first, mystery QAL! I know, it is like I cheated because I got to see the pattern. But baby steps, right? Baby steps. 🙂
