Finally! 2021 Positivity Quilt Finish

Someone said ‘every finish line is the start of a new race’ but for me it is the start of a new quilt. I am now allowed to work on 2022’s Positivity Quilt! As well as all of the other little distractions that pop up along the way.

This quilt doesn’t have nearly as many blocks as Preeti (Sew Preeti Quilts) called for but I decided it was a large enough quilt at this point. All of the pluses are either a shade of blue or yellow and with one exception, all backgrounds are various grays. The blue cross with yellow background came from Alycia (Alycia Quilts). She included this with her quilt when she donated it – you know, a year ago, when we were supposed to have finished these! I thought it was a perfect pop for this quilt so my quilt was technically made by me and Alycia!

There is a border of deep yellow framing the blocks and a dark blue binding. The binding was selected by my sisters. I texted them when I just couldn’t decide and they chose blue. Smart call on their part, as this looks great!

The backing is a piece called Abiding Reverie from Art Gallery Fabric. I had it in my shop because it reminded me of vintage sheets (which you all know I have a strong affinity for). It is such a cheerful fabric. There is still some left which makes me happy.

After doing straight line quilting both horizontally and vertically, I did this little design on each plus. I am so happy with the new machine my sister gave me. It is so easy to quilt on compared the the older machine I was using. I still don’t have a walking foot yet and the straight line quilting was actually more of a challenge than the FMQ. I had a few puckers since the fabric wasn’t being moved from top and bottom.

This is a finish and I am thrilled with it. I think I will wait and mail it to Mercy with the second quilt. Having this beauty sitting in my sewing room will motivate me to finish the 2022 project! Thank you Preeti for hosting this event, both last year and this!

Me too Anja!! So happy you are back home again. I am sure it is such a relief for you to be on the other side of that repair and renovation process.

A great finish, Bernie! I love the combination of the blues and yellows, and the addition of Alicia’s block is so fun!

Thanks Wendy! It is a nice pop of color and was such a fun thing to see the block when she sent it. That block makes the quilt sing, in my opinion. 🙂

Very true! The hospital has a constant need so it is good to keep the flow of quilts to them going. I love the color combo as well. I have only made a few with two or three color combos and it is a lot of fun. Take care Diann. 🙂

Pretty quilt, Bernie! Blue and yellow always look so good together. The blue binding is perfect, and I like the back, too. Amazing getting it done without a walking foot! Tell us about your new-to-you machine!

When I first got to WA my sister said she didn’t need one of her machines. It is a Bernina 570. She actually had two and both were nearly brand new. So she ‘sold’ it to me for a nominal price. I am in love with it. I keep looking at YouTube and the manual to figure out all that it does. She doesn’t quilt so I haven’t yet gotten the walking foot. I did get the FMQ and the 1/4″ foot though. It is a joy to sew with. I know I owe you an email!! I have been remiss in replying but I will!!!

The pop of yellow background block from Alycia really sets the whole quilt off. Congratulations on the finish and your sisters made a great choice for the binding. Have fun getting started on this years quilt along!

Thanks! I love that one block too and it was just such a coincidence that she sent it to me with her quilt. We didn’t plan for it – crazy when things just work out like that. Hope all is well Yvonne!

I just love this! I didn’t know what you meant by ‘Positivity Quilt’ but I do now and I love it. Might have to work on one for myself! Thank you! And I love the various fabrics and the dark blue border. It just sets it off! Wondering what machine you’re using because I have a couple of extra walking feet.

Hi Carol, So glad you like it – I am happy with the blue and yellow combo too. As for my machine, it is a Bernina. My sister gave it to me but she isn’t a quilter so didn’t have the walking foot. I just need to order one and haven’t gotten around to it. I was thinking I might not need it but doing this project without it proved me wrong. Quilting is much smoother with the walking foot!!

I think I have an extra walking foot that will fit your Bernina because that’s what I used to own before my Baby Lock. I’ll check for your address and put it in the mail to you.

A great finish! You have inspired me to get out my positively quilt start and get back to work on it. It will be donated to our local hospital infusion center rather than sent to California.

Hi Cindy – Happy to hear you are feeling inspired! It is a nice pattern with a great message so it is great for you to finish and donate it. Your local hospital will greatly appreciate it. Anything to bring comfort to people going through a hard time is so helpful. Take care.

Yay – Happy to have encouraged you to finish up the projects. I feel so much better when I don’t have (as many?) unfinished quilts in the sewing room. 🙂

Very pretty, Bernie, and I love that idea that the Finish Line of every quilt is just the start of the next quilt! Of course, that assumes that you finish one race before starting another one, cough cough wink wink!

That color was just such a great coincidence so it had to be included in the quilt. Plus it makes the quilt a lot more interesting to have that yellow square! 🙂
