It is February!! A. new month means another goal to set for what I will accomplish in the sewing room. This month I plan to finish assembling the quilt top I am making with the Mosaic Mystery QAL hosted by Cheryl at Meadow Mist Designs.
I have really enjoyed making this quilt and it is exciting to be this close to finishing up the top. Cheryl did such a great job with the drafting of this pattern. Her instructions were great. One would think this would make it easy for me to avoid errors. Well, what can I say? I haven’t had to rip many seams – I think just a few little ones. Where I made mistakes was not piecing all of the blocks she instructed us to. I think I get going too fast and then don’t read everything thoroughly. As I assembled the top, I found out I had totally skipped making a set of flying geese blocks. I should have been clued in by the extra unused pieces sitting in the project tub but I didn’t really notice. Anyway, I have caught up and made the rest of the missing bits.
Let me ask you… when you are piecing a top, do you sew each row (eg all of Row A, all of Row B and so on). I don’t. I am impatient and want to see the whole thing all laid out. So I have been assembling the rows on the bed and then lifting them and stitching each row together. I love seeing it take shape like this. The design is wonderful with the rusty textured solid creating a bold chain pattern across the top. The dark floral will be used as the border.
So, it should be very attainable because I have over half of the top assembled. Just need to do the rest of the rows and get the borders cut and stitched on. Who knows? Maybe I will even get it basted?
Even though I live just a couple of hours from San Francisco, I can’t get too excited about watching the 49’ers play in the Super Bowl. Instead, I will be working on my Mosaic project. How about you? I’m like you. I like to lay the blocks out, then sew the rows together. I have a particular way of marking the rows if I have to clear the space – one that makes sense to me. That is a fun quilt – she always has great designs. Love that fabric!
Great choice of color for the Mosaic Mystery Quilt. I love the orange running through it. I am always leery of mystery quilts, I’ve been disappointed a couple of time.
Thank you Shirley. This is my second mystery quilt. However, since I sold kits for this quilt, I had seen the pattern. I do like that Cheryl will give the quilter a sneak peak of the pattern if they don’t want to have it be a mystery. It seems like people are very good about respecting others and keeping the design a secret. But that way, it doesn’t have to be a mystery. She will have another event starting in July (in case you might want to participate).

I lay out all my blocks on my wall and label the rows (top L1 etc) and sew them across in horizontal
rows…I really have to see the whole thing together as I am not good at visualization…that’s why I have trouble seeing a quilt pattern in “other” colors than what is on it!! Well, i guess we all have our
blind spots…anyway..your quilt came out beautifully…hugs, Julierose

Football doesn’t excite me. These guys make way too much money now for me to be able to appreciate the game, super stars or not. I get impatient, like you, and tackle my quilt construction similarly. Love your mystery quilt colors. It’s going to be awesome, just like you!

Oooh, I love your version! I sometimes do whole rows so I can start to see it come together. I care extremely little about football; I’ve been catching up on reading blogs while my husband watches the game. So I’ve been in the room, but really only paid attention to the occasional commercial 🙂 I hope you get a lot of sewing done during the game!
You and me both! Televised sports (other than the Olympics – which I do like to watch) bore me. But I got a fair amount of sewing done and it was so nice. Mostly just playing around but that is lots of fun and I rarely do it. Hope all is well with you!
Such a cute quilt, Bernie! I love the colors you chose. I almost always lay out blocks and quilts before I start stitching them together, mostly because I make lots of mistakes and I want to fix them before I stitch them. Doesn’t always happen, but it’s a good theory! Hope you’re having fun stiching through the game.
Thanks a bunch Mari! I stitched my way through the majority of the game. I did stop for half-time but what a disappointment. That was a miserable half-time show – the costumes were tacky beyond belief and just all-around bad. I must be getting old….

Nice quilt, I do like your fabric combination. I’m with you, my reasoning is that’s when I check everything is the right way up and spot any mistakes I made. I still use the bed, my design wall is great for smaller stuff but not for a final layout.
Hi Kate! I haven’t chatted with you in so long. I am happy to hear from you and just popped over to your blog to catch up on what you’ve been doing. So glad you are healing and getting back to normal (whatever that is!). For some reason, I am having trouble commenting on blogs right now. I am so frustrated. This seems to happen every couple of months and it irks me.
Anyway, my design wall (if one can call it that) is quite small and only helps me to put a few blocks side by side. I have to lay everything else out on the guest bed. Fortunately, we don’t have guest too often!

I tend to do a block at a time. I try to follow instructions for assembly, but I find that I am a poor pattern reader and make mistakes because of it. 🙁
