Squared Away in Purple

It is already mid-February and the Rainbow Scrap Challenge color of the month is purple. On Tuesday I set aside my doll quilt projects and pulled out my purple scrap bin. It was time to get to work on some scrappy piecework.

The second block for the Squared Away BOM, hosted by Mari of Academic Quilter and Angela of So Scrappy, was released last Saturday.  For this month, Mari chose a block called The Wishing Ring. Let me say, this is a great block – not fussy at all!  My kind of quilting.  🙂

I have decided that, as much as the scrap bins allow, I would like to use one fabric throughout each block with the same gray background throughout.  I think it will look more cohesive.  Luckily I had some reasonably large purple scraps so it worked for this month.

I had some fun playing around with these blocks. I think it would make a great quilt on its own. I have not made a quilt with just two colors but maybe someday….  I like it. ( Though I doubt I would choose purple for a whole quilt.)  There are some fun secondary patterns that appear with this block.

Putting the January and February blocks together looks like this.  So far, so good!! I still have the purple bin out on the sewing table.  I started cutting three inch squares and playing with them yesterday.  Once I figure out what to do with them, I will show you. 🙂

Have a good weekend everyone. We are enjoying spring like weather so it should be a nice one!

I don’t consider myself a purple fan, but that purple and white quilt is really striking! Kind of makes me want to make one. Thankfully I don’t think I have enough purple!

Haha – it is so funny how often we think that,’oooh, look at that one, I want to make it’. 🙂 I do think I will put this block on the list to be made as a two color quilt someday. Not in purple but maybe blue and white or red and white?

I am really happy with the Squared Away project because it is so manageable. One block per month (tho you make three of each) is doable. There is still time…. Oh, Linda….. come and sew with us!

Pretty blocks Bernie! I love your purples, and these new blocks look great with the earlier ones. It would make a lovely quilt all on it’s own. What if you made this block in a different color for a whole quilt? Maybe a baby quilt? I can see it! Have a great weekend.

I agree – it is a great block and I like it on its own for a quilt. It is on the ‘list’ now!! Thank you Mari – this is a great quilt along. 🙂

Such pretty purples, and I like the patterns in the fabric, too. That block does look like a fun one for a whole quilt. I’m a little overwhelmed with the darker purple, but I bet the lighter one would be really neat for a baby or toddler quilt. (Hey, know any little girl who would love it?) Actually, I can also see the darker purple used with more negative space–like plain blocks between or sashing or a modern layout. And, of course, a blue/white or red/white would be awesome!

Lovely purple blocks Bernie and I love the two colour pic, I’m not a purple fan either but it would be wonderful in black and white. Your blocks re looking great together.

I never know what size to call a scrap — mine tend to be pretty small, therefore difficult to actually use for a block which needs multiple pieces. Purple is a hard colour to use sometime, with range from blue-violet to red-violet, but once you have another 30 or so blocks the chaos will be cohesive, I’m sure. Thanks for linking to TGIFF.

Usually if I have less than a fat eighth left, it goes in the scrap bin. So I am trying to use the bigger pieces for this project because it will look less scrappy and a bit more planned. I like how this is working so far. I am sure some months, I won’t get away with it – for instance, I have very little pink or yellow. Take care Lisa!
