A Quilt for Baby Girl

We are playing the waiting game for Baby Girl (my first grandchild) to arrive.  Everyone is so excited to meet her but she seems to be taking her own sweet time. My daughter-in-law is great about my constant texts – although I had better knock it off or she might block my number. 😉

I did get the baby quilt finished and sent off. It turned out so cute! Remember I used the Simply Snuggly pattern by April Rosenthal, making adjustments to size it down just a bit. The baby’s room is lavender and white. My daughter-in-law asked for lavender, gray, white and pink for quilt colors. I had fun shopping for these.  This was the initial fabric pull but I didn’t end up using all of them.

The quilt is a collection of HST’s set on point with sashing between each one. It was very simple to piece.

I enjoyed quilting this sweet little project. I free motion quilted a flower on each HST.  Once those were finished, I did little loops on the long sashing rows and a little heart on the sashing between each block.

Simple and sweet for Baby Girl.

The backing was made with a cute bunny print and I added a few leftover HST’s to jazz it up a bit.

The quilting shows nicely from the back. There are some puckers, or ripples, where I quilted the sashing. I am guessing it might be from the order in which I quilted it? Quilting the blocks and then coming back to the sashing might not have been the best choice? Maybe I should have been more methodical and quilted each row in its entirety and it may have given me a smoother finish. But it is what it is, right? I washed it and it is all crinkled up and ready for Baby  Girl to use it.

I bundled it up and sent it off. The strip of fabric I used to bundle it up is actually a scrap from the binding fabric. Sweet lavender and white flowers.

Hopefully I will have news of the baby to share with you soon. Until then, I will try to be patient and leave the kids alone! Believe me, it isn’t easy. 🙂

Oh Bernie how adorable!! I love that it is on-point, and your fabrics are so pretty. Your quilting is magnificent!
There is nothing like that first grandchild. Ours will be 18 in May, and he is still the apple of Papaw’s eye. 😉

Linda, I am worse than a kid on Christmas Eve. So excited to meet this little girl. :-).
Your grandson is turning 18 already?? Isn’t that crazy– time is just buzzing by and we certainly can’t stop it. So I guess we just enjoy each day and appreciate all that we have.

This is so sweet! She will love it! What’s better than a quilt from Grandma? And it looks so gentle, perfect for a nweborn baby girl. The quilting is perfect, too, even if there are a few ripples on the back. Once she drags it around she’ll never notice. Hopefully she’ll be wrapped up in this lovely quilt very soon!

I am not too worried about it. The quilting is good enough…. You know? It wasn’t my normal routine but I knew I wanted the flowers over the HST’s. So I did that first while I was thinking about the rest. But once I had two rows of flowers complete, that sashing is pretty much set – so it is rippled. I will think harder about the order of things next time. Baby Girl won’t care. <3 Thanks again for the gray Kona. Now part of her quilt is from her Delaware Auntie Mari. :-)

Well now, best grandma ever – that remains to be seen. But I am going to give it a solid try and hopefully I will earn the title. 🙂

Oh Bernie….I am SOOOOO happy for you. There is nothing like a grandchild—-just as wonderful as your own children (shhh…but it may even be better in some ways….lol…I surely hope my 3 daughters never read this!!). I have 3 grandchildren from 2 of my daughters….4 and 5 year old boys from my oldest and a 2 year old granddaughter from my middle daughter. Your quilt is especially lovely and just perfect for a little girl. The color combination is quite nice…she’s a lucky little one-to-be. ( …and thank you so much for facilitating the exchange of communication between Wendy and myself….). Blessings from a warm and windy West Virginia!

Oh, Kathy – I had forgotten you and Wendy were sort of introduced via the blog. I am glad that all worked out for you.

It is so special to think of my kids becoming parents. Very joyful. Hopefully we will meet Baby Girl soon. Have a lovely weekend. Hope you are getting a bit of spring. Today is lovely but we have a storm coming this weekend. Oh well, sewing time for me!

Such cute hearts and flowers, and the color palette and prints are delicious–perfect to wrap a baby girl in love. She will treasure this (and make tents with it) for years to come. Hang in there. Won’t be long now!

The thought of Baby Girl making tents or forts with the quilt is just adorable. What a fun thing to look forward to.

It’s never easy waiting for a precious tiny human to come into this world! My daughter went with her boyfriend to pick up his five year old son, who he had just gotten custody of, I’m not related in the slightest, but I kept texting them to see if everything was going okay and that their trip was safe and that they made it home okay…it’s just what us Mom’s do!
That quilt is divine. The colors are so soothing! I hope you get word soon that your new grand daughter has arrived!

Haha – the mom in us never changes does it? That is a cute story.
Hopefully baby will come in the next couple of days. 🙂

Oh I love the quilt. I love those bunnies. – or “munnies” as Sarah says. heehee
I had her over today for a few hours and now I am pooped (okay I just recovered from the sinus thing going around, so now I am honey and tea loading)
I hope your sweet baby girl enjoys a happy and easy arrival.

I would guess it is pretty tiring to deal with a toddler after so many years. We aren’t 30 years old anymore! I can’t wait tho. Hopefully she will come soon. 🙂

I had to laugh; I’d be the same way. I’d be trying not to ask “ARE YOU IN LABOR YET” and think of creative ways to say “How are you feeling today” and hoping I wouldn’t get blocked either! 🙂

    The quilt is darling !!

Very cute finish. It’s amazing how babies refuse to adhere to mamas (and grandmas!) time schedules! Looking forward to hearing the good news when she finally does decide that it’s time to make her grand entrance into the world.

PS- can I just say again, how much I love your new logo!

Too sweet! Congratulations! I’m so envious. My only child has chosen not to have children. I keep telling her that she’s denying me my rights, but it doesn’t seem to impress her! Lol XO

This is so sweet!!! The colors are adorable, I love the simple pattern that showcases the fabrics, and the quilting is pretty and open to keep it all softly gushable for cuddling in. 🙂

Perfect soft and sweet colours for a baby girl who will be clearly very loved. Hard to be so far (voice-sniff-of experience here, but FaceTime is a fabulous help. If you ditch the sashing on the next quilt, I bet you won’t have that problem. Love the sweet heart motif you did, and the surprise in the backing!

You will positively love being a Grandma Bernie, I remember when My first grandchild was born, a little girl, Kelsey, and I was at her birth. Kelsey is 21 in May, I cant believe where the time has gone. I have never lived close to her but it didn’t matter, well, it did as I couldn’t take her shopping on Saturdays and do the baking thing and stuff, but we make the very best of the time we did have, and have always been close. Just as long as she doesn’t make me a great grandma…………..

Here’s a suggestion about the order of quilting. If you stitch in the ditch along the sashing, it will anchor the whole thing, then you can do your flowers and hearts. I spray baste (the spray will wash out). I use flowers like that, too. They are easy and variations from flower to flower don’t matter. I always have to remember that little kids won’t care about the quilting and after it’s washed a few times, no one will notice a few wrinkles.
Hope by now you have a new granddaughter.

Thank you Pat. I will do this for the next project. I was thinking if it was pinned tightly enough, the flowers would anchor things. But no, it didn’t work that way! I appreciate your input. 🙂

I really love simpe designs for baby quilts, and yours is one of them!!! You are going to be a wonderful grandmother and your little star will love your gift and carry it around for years!!! I don’t have any kids myself yet, but I started sewing and quilting in order to make beautiful unique gifts for as many friends’ babies as possible!!! They all tell me how excited they are their grown kids still love their little quilts!!
As far as why after your flowers the shashing became a little wrinkly, I would suggest exactly the same as Pat Evans above, either stitch in the ditch, especially the squares, before making the flowers, or spray baste in order to keep the top taut while quilting it!! And as Pat says, kids or mothers who don’t quilt never see the wrinkles, only quilters do!!! and it doesn’t matter also, because the quilt will wrinkle after the first wash, you know!! Thank you for liking my post yesterday too!!

It is heartwarming to see this quilt with my granddaughter. They live across the country from me but I am taking a trip to meet her in about three weeks. I am so excited!!
Next time I will definitely stitch the ditches around the blocks before I quilt the centers. Thank you for your suggestions.
