SAHRR Round 5 – Square in a Square

Square in a square quilt block – that is my kind of block. Easy peasy. It is also the block of choice for round 5 of the stay at home round robin event. Emily at The Darling Dogwood chose this round. Her example of the block is extra adorable because she appliquéd flowers to the center of each block. I strongly suggest you take a look if you haven’t seen them yet. She is so creative!

This is where my quilt is so far. It is kind of wild but I am enjoying it. It has been a long while since I have used any batiks and I forgot how much I like them. For this week, I did two plain 4 1/2″ strips up each side. Then I attached a row of square in square blocks to the top and bottom.

When I made the S in S blocks I chose to use a green center (because they were already cut in the stack of fabrics I am using up). Then I used blue smaller squares for the corners (because, guess what – they were already cut)! I did have to trim the polka dot squares for the fourth corner – they were cut but were a 1/2″ too big. These came together so quickly since I didn’t have to cut fabric.

Wonky Flying Geese

You might notice I haven’t yet incorporated the flying geese blocks. They are a little bit weird looking and I can’t decide if I want to use them or now. For now, they can sit and wait. Maybe it will happen, maybe it won’t???

We had a lot of fun helping our son and his wife move into their new house last weekend. It is so exciting to see them settling into the house. Still lots to unpack and organize but they made huge progress last weekend.

Of note is the quality packing job I did with their tray of flatware. Haha.

We had hoped to see the girls this week but the never-ending virus has descended upon their house once again. Big sister had a fever Saturday through Tuesday. We thought it was one and done but little sister decided to join in and spiked a fever today. Ugh. I remember those days of seemingly endless viruses, fevers and runny noses. I feel for the girls (and for their parents).

Rather than close on that dreary note, I will instead share this cutie pie. Little sister has it in her head she must get out of the car and watch the bus take her big sister off to school. This slays me. She truly loves her big sister.

OK – back to the sewing room. I am going to baste a comfort quilt and get it finished up. I will share it soon.

Happy Sewing everyone!!

Your SAHRR is so pretty and colorful! I hope the girls are both feeling better soon. One of the twins had a fever, but turned out to be strep instead of this fever virus that hits them at times. He’s all good now, thankfully. It hurts when our littles are sick.

Thanks! I am playing around with matching up those flying geese and stitching them together. Maybe that will work out to be added in at some point. Have a lovely day Cindy.

I love how your SAHRR is shaping up, Bernie! What a fun idea to make some of the corners on your square in a square blocks with the colorful dots. I’m glad your kids got moved, but so sorry the littles are sick again. Such a dear picture of little sister watching the bus go! Love it!

Thank you Diann. It is coming along and growing nicely. I want to get it to a lap size or large toddler size?
Love seeing the relationship between the girls grow – Of course there is plenty of arguing but underneath it they have a wonderful bond.

Great minds think alike. I have been playing with that. It may work out to do that and incorporate them – I am waiting to see what next week’s round is. Thank you Yvonne! Aren’t you on the way to QuiltCon???

I love those wonky flying geese, so I hope you figure out how to use them. That photo of A melts my heart! I recall those days of endless sickness too, and feel for them. Your SAHRR is looking good, Bernie!

Well we know big sis can’t get to school without being properly watched! Adorable. And I too really like your flying geese and hope you find a place for them. I like the way the square in a square look almost solid till seen up close.

When I first saw that picture I was wondering what little sister was thinking each time that bus drove off. I know she does like her time at home with Daddy all to her self (he is the primary care parent). But she also seems wistful when H goes off to school. So sweet!

Your SAHRR is looking good. I love the fun way you did your square in a square block, including the pre-cut triangles. Sorry to hear about the young ones being sick, but it does seem to work out that way for some time. Thank goodness spring is coming which seems to give some relief to the constant onslaught.

Thanks Kathleen! I am quite happy with this crazy bright quilt. One more round and then it will get finished up!
I suspect my son and his wife are anxious for good weather and the hope that this viral nonsense will stop. The little one came up with pink eye yesterday and it was tough explaining why she couldn’t have a turn with the kaleidoscope they have. Sigh – and it continues!

Your colours are super and the flying geese wonky… this is going out of the box and I love it.
Somehow it remembers me a little bit to the colours of … the little hungry caterpillar… gues you all now this book of this green hungry animal… so all the SAHRR are, round by round. Going bigger and brighter and nicer and nicer…
This Foto … send it to newspaper .. it will win the first price! It is sooooo wonderfull.
We do not have this schoolbuses…. But I can imagine what it means when everybody goes in and only this sweety must stay out. So so nice!
And look at the colours.. the grey contrast between the yellow and the pink! That makes it so wonderfull….

Hi Eva – Thank you for your note! I loved the Hungry Caterpillar book and you are absolutely right – this quilt has the same colors! There are some super bright prints from this book and maybe I will order one to use as the backing. That would be so fun and all due to your suggestion!
That is interesting about not having school busses in your area. Do the parents take the children to school or do they walk there? I didn’t have a bus when I was small and my sisters and I all rode our bikes to school.

      Take care Eva.

I love the colors in this Bernie! I actually really like your funky geese, so I hope they make it in, but I know you’ll find something else for them if they don’t. Sorry that I haven’t seen all the previous rounds–really love your hourglass blocks from last week! This is very fun looking!

Thank you Emily. As for the flying geese – if I had intended them to be wonky, I would love them. It is because I didn’t start out with that intention that they look weird to me. However they will be used one way or another!

Hi Alycia – Thanks a bunch. I have five sisters and it is a blast having this group of automatic friends in life. I am sure my parents were exhausted for the first 15 years (at least) but it is lucky for us they has such a big family. How about you? Did you grow up in a big family?
