Squared Away Quilt Top

The pieces to this quilt top have been stacked up for such a long time! I am so excited to have pieced the top together – finally!! In 2018 I had the best of intentions to sew along with Mari and her Squared Away BOM. Who knows what happened though? I only got about 1/2 way through and set it aside, never completing all of the blocks.

When I was moaning and groaning to Mari about my lack of fortitude and asking her what the heck would I do with these pretty blocks, she said to put them together with some solid blocks and make a top. It is very clear she is the teacher and I am the student, and I am forever grateful. Being an obedient but not timely student, I did as she suggested. Back in February I cut lots of 10 1/2″ squares of a piece of yardage I had from Pat Bravo’s Dare line. Then it sat for a while. I stitched the squares and the pieced blocks together soon after. Then….. it sat for a while. See my pattern? It is not very efficient.

I started to look around in the shop wondering what would work for borders and found the perfect combination!

I love the celery green textured solid with this floral from BariJ’s Sage line. Don’t they look great? There are quite a few green blocks as well as purples and this pulled it all together.

I couldn’t be more pleased. (Well, that isn’t exactly true. If a quilting fairy would come slip into the sewing room tonight, prepare the backing and pin baste this baby, then I would be absolutely thrilled.) That isn’t likely to happen though so the backing choice will be decided upon soon.

It is really a pretty quilt top though. I am motivated to finish this one up now.

I did press it and hang it in the closet for now though. Julia has high school graduation next week. We have a family reunion on Saturday and …. guess who is coming in on Saturday night???

I can’t wait!! They will be here for ten days which is lots of Grammy time. I will be off-line for much of that time because, you know, I have lots of important things to do.

Linking up with:

Needle and Thread Thursday, Brag About Your Beauties, as well as this week’s TGIFF over at MMM! Quilts.

The blocks are really fun, and I love the border fabrics! That green is swoon-worthy, but I just cannot buy any more fabric! Hahaha. I’m so excited for you to spend time with your grandkiddo and son! We’ll just wait here for all the fun photos afterwards! Enjoy!

Thank you Brenda. The sun was shining through the back when I took the photos (on the clothesline). It does look kind of like a nice glow. Nice to hear from you. πŸ™‚

Thank you Carole. Now the usual decision…. how to quilt it? I think I am going to gift this to a couple getting married soon. I will likely use a walking foot and some sort of straight line pattern. I have a book by Mary Matsuta and will look to her for inspiration. Have a great weekend!!

Hi Judy, So nice to hear from you!! Thanks a bunch – That fabric a great find when I was hunting through my stash. Those prints that read as solid work great and (to me anyway) are more interesting than true solids. Hope all is well – See you Tuesday night!

Thank you Roseanne – I will pass along your congrats to Julia. Now that finals are over she is down with a wicked cold. Funny how that seems to happen. The stress goes down and the bug hits. Right? Have a wonderful weekend!

Ah, Bernie, you give me way too much credit for this lovely top that you made. It turned out great! I love the borders. They really bring those blocks to life. Can I suggest the wide back gray polka dot for the back? Enjoy your granddaughter’s visit! (I know her parents are coming, too, but we all know who the important visitor is!) Have a really fun week!

No Mari, you deserve tons of credit. I would not make these sorts of blocks were it not for your tutorials. Those take soooo much time and effort on your part. Sometimes I don’t know if people appreciate (enough) the thought that goes into these. I appreciate it!!
The gray would have been great but I am out of it. I do have a different one that isn’t a widleback and it might be perfect. I will have to take a look at it. (well, once I am done with my grammy duties!!). πŸ™‚

I am just loving this quilt Janine. Sometimes it comes together so well. I have a wedding at the end of June and I am hoping this will be finished – or maybe gifted just a tad late? It would be a nice summery quilt for them. And, yes, such a personality! She is really a character. πŸ™‚

Combining the angular blocks with the pretty floral print is just perfect, and the colors just make it all pop. Nice Job!
Wow 10 days! You will all have such a great time, just be sure to kiss those sweet little cheeks as much as possible. πŸ™‚

Absolutely!! I can’t wait for the fun to begin. They arrive tonight at 8:30 which will be so late for her. I hope she isn’t all out of sorts. It is an hour long drive from the airport to our house so she might just fall asleep. Long travel day for a toddler. Thanks a bunch Linda. Hope your newest grand baby is thriving. Do you see him soon?
