Vermont Sewing Continues

Time has flown by and I will be heading home on Wednesday. When I was getting ready to come out here I thought three weeks sounded like such a long time but yikes, it has gone by quickly!! We quickly settled into a rhythm and it has been wonderful

H and I have spent a lot of time in the kitchen. She has a new stool to stand on so she can ‘help’ cook and she just loves it. She crawls in and out constantly and has learned to drag it from counter to counter to the sink and back. Washing dishes, stirring and mixing, so many projects. Luckily she and I enjoy baking and we have made SOOO many things. Cookies, focaccia bread, muffins – I have probably put on a couple of pounds during this trip.

Maple Pecan Scones

Yesterday we made these Maple Pecan Scones. She had so much fun and was covered in flour by the end of this round of baking. They are delicious and if you want to try them, here is a link to the recipe on the King Arthur Flour website. I cut them fairly small so she wouldn’t have a huge serving. Actually I put half of them in the freezer so they can have them again after I leave.

As for sewing, I have done quite a bit! I made a table runner for my daughter in law. When I was at Jo-Ann’s, they had the Home Decor fabrics on sale and I picked up this floral print. It is a nice weight and has a linen like texture.

I also grabbed a celery green Kona solid (I don’t know what the real name is – I didn’t check the bolt.) This project took no time at all to make. I cut a rectangle (I think it was 14″ x 50″) and stitched the front and back, right sides together. Once I turned it right side out, I ran two lines of topstitching around the perimeter and called it good. It looks great on their dining room table. However, I removed it after taking the photo so we wouldn’t spill on it before my DIL even gets home!

Another project was to make a super hero cape for my grand daughter. Again, this was a very simple project. I bought a 1/2 yard of red satin fabric at Jo-Ann’s and folded it in 1/2, right sides together. I stitched around two sides and turned it right side out. With the folded side and the two stitched sides, it was finished on three sides of the square. After pressing it (on super low heat) I folded the raw edges to the inside and stitched two seams, one at the top edge and one about 2 inches lower. This left an opening at each side to thread the cord through.

My grand daughter wasn’t thrilled with this. She doesn’t seem to care one way or another about it. However, I suspect she will enjoy it at some point. It is silky and shiny and will catch her eye when she is in the mood for playing dress up.

I have just a few more days with her so I am keeping her home from day care this week. She can go at the end of the week after I leave. Not sure what we will do with our last couple of days but I know it will be fun.

Linking up with the usual parties. Check them out at the top of the page, under Link Ups.

What wonderful memories you are building! She is just darling! Those scones look delicious, and the table runner is beautiful. What a nice welcome home gift for your DIL. Enjoy your day (hope you have coffee)!

Lots and lots of coffee this morning!! I am really happy with the table runner – having to buy the 50″ length means I have plenty more of the fabric. When I get back home, I think I will make one for myself with the leftover fabric. Win-win!!

She is ready to be home!!! I think she has done really well, considering how long she had to be away for. She comes home this weekend and I know she just cannot wait. The scones are awesome. I love scones and haven’t made them for a long time.

Yes, Anita – so fun and really yummy. It has been fun to cook with my son and have this time with him. It is no fun living on opposite sides of the country, thats for sure!

Oh, what fun you’ve had, with a nice balance of gramma time and sewing time. I have a feeling you haven’t gained any weight at all despite the yummy food. In fact, you might even have lost some if I’m right about the energy it takes to keep up with a Grand. 🙂

Hmm, maybe?? That would be nice anyway considering the number of cookies I have indulged in over the past couple of weeks!!

“melt-able”. That is a good one Preeti!! I hope so because I can feel a few extra pounds that I didn’t have when I got here several weeks ago!!

H is just adorable and I’m sure she was a big help in the kitchen. What a great trip you’ve had! Have a safe trip home. I know you’ll miss H, but will you miss the cold and snow? 🙂 I know your daughter in law will appreciate the pretty gift you’ve left, too!

Thanks – yes – a huge help!! She loves being in there though. One of her favorite things is to ‘wash’ dishes in the sink. If I put some soapy water and a bunch of plastic cups in there, she will play for quite a while. As for the snow, it isn’t horrible. I always refer cold weather over hot. I am not a fan of heat!!

Too funny, but quite likely, that your granddaughter doesn’t like the cape! Best laid plans, and all that. I remember the Christmas my mother gave my daughter a doll. She opened it up, scowled at it, and tossed it aside (she was only 3 or 4). We were totally embarrassed, but my mom took it all in stride. To this day, my daughter doesn’t like dolls, lol! Glad you had a great visit!

Kids are what they are, right? The cape isn’t a big deal. Very little sewing time – so if it isn’t used, no huge loss. They certainly don’t hide their feelings, huh??

I had never seen one of those stools until now. I immediately went and ordered one, because my boys love spending time with me in the kitchen!

I LOVE this stool. She is much safer than standing on a kitchen chair, which is what she was doing before. I feel like I can turn around, go to the fridge, etc and she will be safe. It is well worth the $$ spent. Hope you agree!!

Hi Bernie! This post just warms my heart. I love all the time you got to spend with H, and that super cape is super fabulous. It won’t be long and she’ll get it and want to wear it. The table runner looks fab, and your DIL will smile when she sees it on the table. I would have kept her home from daycare, too. You need those last few days to H moments all to yourself. {{Hugs}} and safe travels home. I know you will have a welcoming committee of two for sure who have missed you! Happy Monday to you. ~smile~ Roseanne

I am home and getting back into my routine. It was a great trip but home is always nice too, right?? My goal for today is to get some sewing time in. The last couple of days were filled with chores – enough of that!! Have a great weekend Yvonne!

Wow time did fly! She seems so grown up. I love that you are teaching and making these memories with her. Treasured time for both of you! Enjoy the rest of your days with her before your return trip home – good for you keeping her out of day care so you can savor ever minute!

Hi Barb: I wish I had her every Tuesday!! I think that a lot when I see your cute pics with your two girls each week. I really enjoy those posts. It was such a fun trip – now back home and getting into my regular routine. Which is just fine, I do love being home. I am a bit of a homebody I suppose. 🙂

The table runner looks great! One of the things I miss most is cooking with my kids when they were little, especially my boys (when my girls were young, I just didn’t get as much time). Our first grandchild isn’t far off from being old enough to bake with so soon I guess I’ll get my “fix” that way. And I do have plans to make him a set of capes for his birthday–something no child should be without!

She is yummy!! I suspect she will play with the cape at some point. It seems like all of my kids went through a ‘dress up’ period – she might still be a bit young. No worries though. It was a really great three weeks with her. Have a wonderful weekend Cherie.

Once you realize how great a cape is, you can never be without one! (I made one with a Superman symbol on it when I was going to chemo. It made everyone laugh. And it made an instant connection with people, during a time when I needed to connect.) So, patience, I think she will like it once she see that everyone likes hers!

Yes, I’m a survivor. Still in the first two years after treatment; however, each visit, they smile and tell me they will see me in 3 months. No big deal, just lots of deep breathing before the appointments!

Thank you Lisa. How are your grands?? Have you been able to see them frequently? It is nice to be home and was appreciating the 50 degree weather yesterday afternoon. We had a burst of sunshine for a bit but it is chilly again today. Enjoy the weekend!! Hope all is well with you.

Ahhhh… nothing like cooking with the grandkids. Our eldest grandson loved to make brownies with me when I took care of him (he’s just turned 19, so those days are long past). The younger grandson liked to make Monkey Bread when they visited us but he’s now 12, so no more Monkey Bread sessions in the kitchen. Time goes by and the kids grow up–enjoy them while you have them small!

For sure. This is my first grand child so we are just enjoying every visit with her. Sure wish we lived closer though. Do you live near your kids/grandkids? Hope so – Take care and have a great weekend!!

Back home now and happy to be in my regular routine. As wonderful as the trip was, I am always happy to get back home – this was definitely the longest time away from my husband. This weekend is going to be all about sewing – the last day or two was filled with chores, unpacking, laundry, grocery shopping. Not so fun! Have a wonderful Saturday Kathleen!

It sounds like you’re having a wonderful time together! Of course I don’t remember this, but my grandmother used to tell me about how I stayed with her when I was a baby and my parents went on a trip to Hawaii. I was pulling up onto furniture and she was afraid I was on the verge of walking — afraid because she knew my mom would be devastated if she missed those first steps — so she carried me around as much as possible the whole time. As I was reading your post, I was wondering about that extended visit with my Grammy and wishing it was in my memory somewhere. I’ll bet she was baking and sewing and showering me with love, just as you’ve been doing with your little H!

Oh my gosh! This is such a great story. I just love it. Did it work? Did you wait until your mama got home before walking??

How are the college apps doing? Have any acceptances been received? My daughter is in at all four that she hoped for and now has a decision to make. Such an exciting time for her (and us too!)
