Sew Mama Sew Giveaway Day

Hello and welcome to Needle and Foot. As you probably know, today is the spring giveaway day for Sew Mama Sew. I love these events. It’s a great way to meet lots of bloggers that I might not have come across otherwise. I know that you are likely hopping from one blog to the next today, checking out the giveaways — so I will be brief!

Having been quilting fanatically for the past three years, I started this blog last summer to further immerse myself in the quilting community. I have a passion for all fabric and lately have been on the hunt for vintage fabric. If you would like to learn more about me, check out my “About” page up at the top of my site.  I have pictures of my finished projects available for you on the “Quilt Gallery” page; the link is at the top. To get to know what I am all about, you might like to read some of my more popular posts written over the past ten months that I have been blogging. I hope you will enjoy taking a peek at my world and that I get a chance to get to know you through your comments.

As a kid I always wanted 12 children. My mom told me I should marry a farmer if that were the case. Well, I didn’t marry a farmer but managed to collect 12 children through the years. By the way I was an only child. You always want what you don’t have.

I can’t pick a favorite, so I’ll share one of my earliest memories of my mom…
I couldn’t have been older than 4. We were in my Grama’s sewing room, when her house was on the same property as ours. I was cutting fabric using Mom’s pinking shears (or “Pinky” shears…) I cut my leg and Mom raced me across the yard to home to patch me up. I still have a rounded scar from that day…

I have a son and I am also exposing him to art and sewing.

My favorite memory of mom comes from a very scary time in our lives. My mom was very sick with pancreatitis and had been in a coma for over a month. She was in an ICU unit and we could only visit for brief periods each day. One day we walked in and were met by her nurse – a guy with a BIG smile – who said ” I have a surprise for you today” He pulled back the curtain around the bed and Mom was awake. She smiled so sweetly at us. Although it was still a long recovery, MOM was back with us and hope was restored. Years later, Mom is still with me and her sweet smile makes my heart sing.

I lived for a time in Seoul, South Korea. My Mom came to visit me, but had not told me she quit dyeing her hair. What a shock to see her so gray! I never thought of my parents as getting older until then. Mothers and fathers should always be here. I just visited her grave for the first time on Sunday (600 miles away). I talked to her and Dad. I miss them so much and can’t believe it’s been 5 and 7 years. I still find myself thinking that I have to tell her this or that and start to reach for the phone. kathleendotlutzatcomcastdotnet

My mom taught me to sew at age 6. I have 3 sisters, but she didn’t “see the trait” in them that she saw in me. I was a perfectionist like her, so that’s probably why I started out so young, and allowed me “special” treatment and time with her. We would get together when my girls were younger and have a sew fest of clothes for the season. The girls loved their individual outfits that didn’t look like everyone else, and should have started up a business at that time, but I was a mom, nurse, and in the wee hours at night, sewed.

Reliving my childhood memories with my Mom, I guess I really was a brat. Some of the things that I did when I was little is quite unbelievable. Poor Mom. Been trying to become a better person and just love her as my Mom. Thank you for being a part of the SMS Giveaway Day and giving me the chance to win that lovely green fabric.

She can now get ready entirely by herself in the mornings, and while I did tear up a little bit, I also am happy to know we are entering a different stage of her life and she will need me for other things. Some of my happiest memories of my mom involve her sitting at her sewing machine making some special outfit that I couldn’t wait to wear. When I was older, I got to choose the fabric and pattern. I miss my mom but she gave me a love of sewing and I treasure her lessons in making me do it right, even if that meant a lot of time with a seam ripper!

One of the things I enjoy most about being a mom is all the fun things I get to teach my 2.5 year old son – he is fascinated by my knitting and quilting (he calls it all “knit-in”) and he is always excited to come and help – it’s very cute to see him messing around with yarn or “play-tending” to sew at my machine.

When my son was born my Mom was over the moon! She thought he was just about the best thing ever. She only got to enjoy him for a short time as she died when he was 2. He was her only grandchild born before she died. It’s hard to imagine how thrilled she would have been to have a BUNCH of grandchildren.

My mom is almost 87 and is an avid heirloom basket maker who sells her baskets to folks all across the country (Granny’s Basket Shop on etsy). She lives with me part of the year and with my sister part of the year. She’s due to come back to my house in 2 weeks for another stint here in VA, and we’re really looking forward to it. i have many memories of helping her sell her baskets at craft shows, and everyone loves her…as do I!

When I was in high school my mom was diagnosed with multiple myeloma (cancer). She didn’t tell me. She thought she would never see me graduate from high school. She prayed I would come to know the Lord. In my senior year I was baptized (with my stepdad!) Her cancer was reclassified & she kept all that happened away from me. In March of last year she was again given the diagnosis of multiple myeloma. This time she told me. She went through a year of chemo and 2 weeks ago the oncologist told her she is in remission! Praise the Lord and we are jumping for joy!

My favorite memory is helping my mom at a church craft show. She used to sew dolls and doll clothing and I remember her not only at the sewing machine, but also setting up her space in the living room to work on her display. On the day of the sale, we got up early (I was so excited!) and I helped her set up at the church and make change. I think it inspired me to sell my own crafts 30 years later. 🙂

I think it was that wedding dress post that drew me in and how I’d found your blog awhile ago 🙂 I have a mom story…right now it seems that everyone likes to straighten their hair. When I was in middle school we wanted a different look. So on some evenings my mom would braid my hair in tiny braids all over ( it was long ) so that the next morning I could take them all out and have that rippled look : ) What patience !

I am a coffeeholic! My son learned at a VERY young age (3-4) that the way to mommy’s heart was through coffee and chocolate…so he did both. One morning he used my one cup coffeemaker to make me a cup of coffee. He used THREE SCOOPS of coffee in my one cup maker. Yes, it was MUD. To make it flavored he melted an entire Hershey Bar into the coffee. He brought it up to my bedroom and put it under my nose next to the edge of the bed to wake me up. The best part of waking up…my kid. YES, I drank it….chocolate covered grounds and all, LOL!!!!!

It happened just 2 days ago. My daughter INSISTED she take me to a store called Things Remembered and INSISTED I pick out something I like! I chose a silver braclet with a heart locket and she had it engraved with the phrase I use since her child was born…love forever and always.. and her and her new husbands name. Then they gave a free silver jewelery box and she engraved on the top.. “you’ll always be my hero”. I cried!

I could tell you so many wonderful things about my mom. She raised 8 kids all alone. (That’s a whole ‘nother story.) When I was about 10, my uncle wanted to buy the 3 youngest ones –including me— each a bike. Mom talked my uncle into buying me a sewing machine instead. I was totally upset about this! But as the summer wore away and the bikes were put into the shed for the winter, I still had my sewing machine set up in the living room where Mom was teaching me how to sew. Those lessons were the springboard for my love of sewing that still is growing today….about 40 years later! I even made my first pair of blue jeans, tons of my own clothes, baby clothes, and Halloween costumes and now I’m getting into quilting. Bless her heart because my mom was so smart and knew what I needed. I miss her so much!

I don’t have too many good memories of childhood, we were pretty poor and life was hard, my mom didn’t handle it well. But she did make sure our birthdays were special, we could choose the dinner we wanted her to cook and the cake she would bake (even if my father wasn’t happy with it, the picky pain-in-the…). We may have been poor, but we were never hungry because she made sure we weren’t. <3

We struggled with infertility for four years before our daughter was born. Then God quickly blessed us with another baby, a boy, 2 1/2 years later. Then it was a long 10 years before we were blessed again with our youngest boy who is now 13. I prayed so hard for these babies of mine, now grown and almost grown. I wouldn’t trade any of it for the world. Thanks!
