Happy Sewing!

Honestly, I should be dressed and out the door by now. I want to get to the grocery store and have another errand or so to do. Instead I am on my second cup of coffee and thought I would do a quick post. The grocery store can wait.

I spent all week down with a cold – honestly these grand daughters of ours really need to stop sharing germs with me. Ray is fine, the girls only felt mildly ill for about a day or two and I felt crummy for over a week. I think I am on the other side of it, just in time for Thanksgiving!!

While I was being lazy on the couch and scrolling Facebook, I saw a post in our (sort of) local sewing group. Someone had made these ornaments and I really liked them. Looking at the tutorial on AppleGreen Cottage, I saw how easy they would be to make. I carried my Kleenex, Ricola cough drops and water up to the sewing room and got started. I love them! The bells really finish them off but the center could have anything – a pretty button or a fluffy pom pom would also be cute. I am going to put a thread loop on them for hanging.

When we were with the girls two weeks ago, A was really enjoying playing with American Girl Dolls (they were her mother’s). I thought about making something for them for Christmas and had this brainstorm to make a set of hospital items. My daughter in law is a physician so the girls see her wearing scrubs quite often. She is a radiologist so I am trying to create a way for them to play pretend doctor. There are two dolls so one can be the patient and the other, a doctor.

A few months back, the conversation above happened between A and Daddy. Clearly she is trying to understand what Mom does when in her office (she works at both the hospital and from home). Maybe she doesn’t understand one doesn’t have to take their skin off to look at the bones, she does seem to grasp that taking pictures of bone suits is the way to make some money. Hahaha

Additionally, I got to work on a Christmas tree skirt for Julia. This is her first time putting a tree in her apartment so she is collecting a few holiday items. I didn’t use a pattern for this – but in case you are wondering, I used five inch squares and kept the diameter at less than 42″ so I could back it with one piece of fabric. The pom poms really add some character to the skirt. It was an easy project and I will bring it to her on Thursday.

OK – my coffee is now cold (ugh!) so it is time to get dressed and head off to the grocery. For those of you in the US – enjoy the holiday this week. I know the world is a bit of a mess but we always have so much to be grateful for. Find those small blessings and count them up. Happy Thanksgiving!

I’m sorry those adorable girls share their germs with you, Bernie, but I know they share lots of other amazing things with you, too! The scrubs for the dolls are a fun idea! Love Julia’s tree skirt, too. I would l9ve to make a new one, but the old one was made by my mom when we were first married, and I can’t bear to replace it while she is still around to see our tree! Happy Thanksgiving!

I would feel the same way Diann. These sorts of items are treasures in my book! Keep the tree skirt – there are so many other fun things to make. I hope your mom is doing well. Happy Thanksgiving to you too.

Hi Kristin – Happy Thanksgiving to you as well! We may end up passing each other on the road because Ray and I are heading over to Samammish for Thanksgiving. So you and I will be at opposite ends of the road.

Have a lovely time with your family. Nothing better than spending the day with your loved ones.

Bernie, these ornaments are lovely! I did them last year and they are lovely little presents, did them in three diffent sizes, and in line one under the other to put in the window!
Yes, a cold comes three days, stay three days and go three days. Did you book more? Lol
    Happy and lovely Thanksgiving!!!

Eva – I love your remark about the length of a cold! So true.
The idea of doing the ornaments in three sizes is really interesting. I think I will give that a try. Thank you for sharing! If you have a picture of one of yours, I would love to see it.

      Take are Eva.

Happy Thanksgiving, Bernie! Glad you are past the worst of the yuck, just in time for Thanksgiving with the family. I love A’s thoughtful assessment of her mom’s work – haha! You’ve been busy in spite of the cold – the tree skirt is very cute, and so are the ornaments!

Hey Wendy – I did get a lot of sewing done. It was a sew in the morning and nap after lunch routine. Thankfully I feel fine now. Glad you enjoyed A’s career plan. Hahaha.

Love your stories and your projects. I bought the pompoms on tape, similar to those on the tree skirt, at our local dollar tree. They had white and red. I am making Barbie dresses to donate to the Toy Rescue Mission, here in Tacoma. The pompoms are small and very cute on the hem of a dress.

Hi Torry – I am finding some fun little things at our dollar tree in their craft section. The pom pom tape is a great idea for the doll clothes. Barbie clothes are so very tiny. It must be a challenge to make them. I bet the kids really love receiving them and they will last longer than purchased outfits – Barbie clothes seem to fall apart so quickly.

      Happy Thanksgiving!!

I developed a pattern that makes up pretty quickly. I have donated a 150 Barbie gowns at a time. So it had to be easy!
Does your dollar tree have the small cutting mats? I bought a ton of them and have given a lot of them away. One of my friends uses them as the bottom of bags.
The pompoms would also be cute on the hem of pants for American Girl dolls.

The tree skirt is so cute with the fussy cuts! So glad Julia is close as well as your folks. I had to chuckle at “Kleenex, Ricola cough drops and water” to the sewing room. 😉 Glad you are over the worst in time for this week. Where will you celebrate Thanksgiving? We sold our big fat tree (takes up too much space and lots of work), so I’ll just decorate tables and such – but those ornaments are cute, I’ll have to check it out the link. Happy Thanksgiving Bernie!

We are heading to Andrew and Naomi’s for Thanksgiving. I am assigned to bring a vegetable and some cranberry sauce. Easy Peasy!
Just yesterday I was looking at a live tree that is about 3 or 4 feet tall and wondering if we should go that route. Not as big and I don’t have to toss it after the holidays. We have plenty of space to plant it. Hmmm…. decisions, decisions.

Happy Thanksgiving to you, too, Bernie! I love the littel ornaments and the tree skirt, and those doll scrubs are adorable! “None hundred dollars” just about sums it up, doesn’t it? 🙂 Have a fun week and I hope you’re feeling better.

Hey Mari – Thanks a bunch. I am feeling a lot better. Just in time for Thanksgiving and for my littles to re-infect me with something new!! Just teasing. Today I will do some cooking. Have to say, I like just bringing a few things and going to their house. It is a treat! Hope you will be with your one, or more, of your kids on Thursday. 🙂

This would be a fun use for the bells Carole. I think the tutorial uses an 8″ circle but I have been using a 7″ since that is a plate size I have on hand for tracing. I think they are really pretty with the metallic fabric.

Those ornaments are delightful and I love the jingle bell for the center. What a cute conversation between A and her daddy; I think those American Girl Doll outfits will be a huge hit. And I’m starting to think about a “tree” skirt as well (I’m thinking about making one to go around the base of our spiral staircase…). Those pompoms are a great way to finish it out. Have a very Happy Thanksgiving, Bernie!

Hi there – I love putting pompoms on projects because of the whimsy they add. I am really curious about what you end up doing with the spiral staircase. Sounds like a fun project. Share when you get it going!!
