2024 SAHRR – Round 5

It took me all week to get upstairs to work on my Round Robin project this week. But yesterday I did it! This week was Quilting Gail’s week to supply the prompt. Her only request was that, somehow, the number 4 factored into our decision for what to do with this round. Four patch blocks, use four colors, maybe 1/4 square triangles or pinwheel blocks – these use the number four in one way or another.

I had no problem deciding how to implement the suggestion of four in my round. I looked at the bits of leftovers I am working with and counted out four blue strips with tiny black and white HST’s attached to them.

I connected four of the HST’s with a square of the blue in between each one. Then I added enough of the blue strip to each end to be able to border one side of the Round Robin project.

It looks great. After attaching it to the left side of the quilt top, I measured the width of the rounds on each side of the original center block. Unless the prompt doesn’t work out, I plan to add the final round to the left side of the project and hope to emphasize black in that last round. This should lessen the asymmetry and balance things out a bit.

This has come together quickly and now that it is almost finished, I am looking at each section and planning how to quilt it. I enjoy quilting something small and easily maneuvered. This one will be fun.

We had one really nice day of sunny weather this week which was such a treat. Ray wanted to take out the boat as he had done quite a bit of work on it and needed to test a few things out.

As you can see, there was no one on the water. But the sun was out and the sky was just gorgeous. It was the perfect way to take advantage of a bit of sunshine. Heading to the end of February is leaving me hopeful spring is not far off!

This weekend I plan to attend a monthly meeting of the local chapter of Project Linus. I have donated to them before when in California. However, I haven’t ever gotten involved. Since moving up here, I haven’t been interested in joining a guild but I am interested in meeting other quilters and, as always, love service clubs and projects. Have any of you gotten involved with Project Linus? I am sure I will meet some like minded, nice people in the group!

Wonderful way to use 4 in your round! These leftover bits have had a good time find their place in your SAHRR. Fun to have pleasant days in February leading up to spring! I hope you find some new like minded folks at Project Linus!

Seems like there is a false spring every year! My daffodils are just now beginning to bloom. But it will get cold and dreary again – it is too early for the real spring weather. Makes me excited though. Ray came home with seeds for my sunflowers and sweet peas yesterday. Won’t be too long and we will be able to plant for the summer!

Your quilt is looking fantastic! How cool that you had those HSTs so you could just whip up that border in no time flat! Gotta love that! We are hopeful spring will be early, but we also know we need to get through March, which is often a stormy month. We will see! Hope you have fun at the quilt group!

Thank you Wendy. Sure seems like the last six weeks or so went by really fast! I am excited to get the last bit put together and then sandwich it for quilting.

I am going to donate last year’s SAHRR to Project Linus so I will bring it to the meeting on Sunday afternoon. Have a nice weekend!

I love the super modern vibe of this! I find myself wondering if it would be as good (unique) if you had tried to plan the whole quilt from the beginning. I’m thinking that the surprise of each prompt forces us (in a good way) to be extra creative in approach. Does that make sense? Saying it awkwardly. Beautiful photos of your weather. I didn’t know you had a boat. Can you keep them docked in the water all year. Here, they have to be stored. I’ll be interested in what you find out about Project Linus.

HI – I totally agree that this quilt looks as it does because of the nudge we had each week which helped to think more creatively. The only parameter I set was to use only the leftover bits and make it small-ish so I could hang it on a wall somewhere.

The boat is somewhat new. Ray loves to fish and wants to fish out on the water instead of always from the shore or in rivers. So he bought this boat last November, knowing it needed some work. He has spent many hours on it since then. We had a lot of fun out on the bay yesterday. I think both of us will really enjoy this!
I’ll let you know about Project Linus. I hope it is a nice group of people.

Linda, this was ocean. We were on the bay just below the Puget Sound. There are loads of lakes around but Ray likes the fishing on the bay. 🙂

I’m loving your modern little quilt! My daffodils have bloomed and our trees are getting small leaves here in Northeast Texas. I still want cooler weather. We’re predicted mid 80s Monday and then back down in low 60s Wednesday . I hope you can make some new quilt buddies 🤗

I remember last year was so very hot for Texans – I hope it isn’t the same for you this year.
I have one daffodil the opened and many that will soon. Yesterday I saw tiny buds of the peonies poking through the ground and the hydrangeas are starting to show green leaves trying to push. Makes me happy!!

The blue of the water is a perfect friend for your SAHRR this year, or??
Water and water activities go together with the colour blue for my opinion and so its in total harmony.
I love the ideas of each round, take two colours, take four… this gives us a wide range of creativity.
And you did sooooo beautiful. You mentioned to stay small and I think this is may be a bigger task than having a quilt after the SAHRR rounds.
Love the modern and improv so much. Yes, first spring flowers are everywhere to buy now and it is hard to decide – go out and do first work in the garden or stay in and sew. You can pay a lot of money for all these first spring flowers and have a blooming garden …. but mhh… only some flowers and buying some new tools or fabric is the other idea.. :-))
Have much fun with the boat – great if your hubby has interests! So may be more fresh fish in the kitchen soon?
    happy happy weekend!

Yes Eva – we are getting to the season where the garden and being outdoors will compete with time for sewing.
I had not thought about the blues of my project and the blues of the ocean – they do make a pretty pair for the post!
Ray does love to fish. Last year he caught many crabs and lots of clams. Hoping for salmon this year. The season just opened! Yum.

I never got involved in Project Linus and I’m not sure if there is a local chapter or whatever one calls the group here. I hope you find a group you would like. I never could get interested in the local guild here it wasn’t a good fit for me with so few interested in hand work as I am. Your quilt is looking good I like those colors.

Hi Karen – I love the mission of Project Linus so I am really hoping this group is a good fit for me. I want something more specific like this, as opposed to a regular guild. Crossing my fingers!

Are you planning on going to the Sewing Expo? I am going on Thursday, February 29th. I always see, learn, enjoy so much! I also spend more than I think I will! ( I have learned to budget for this, though.)

The expo runs Thursday through Sunday; however, I understand that Ray must take priority. I try to go every year and I already have a list started to look for at the Expo.

Hi Nancy – Thanks so much. I am happy with the colors – Someone else mentioned the quilt matched the picture of the water. I hadn’t even thought of that but it sure does!

Thanks Judy – that is the goal with this project – use only the bits. However, I will still have leftovers! I didn’t plan the original quilt very well. But sooner or later, they will all go into something!

What a great idea to use 4 HSTs in your round. The modern vibe of your piece is terrific. I have a few friends involved in the Linus project. They love it. Their group has sew days where they get a challenge or maybe they work on clues to a mystery quilt. Last month, they held a show to share the results of their challenge which was to take donated orphan blocks and turn them into a quilt! The results were amazing! They share lots of laughs while doing amazing work and serving so many kids. I hope you will find the chapter closest you a good fit.

I love hearing about the Project Linus chapter your friends work in. Keeps things creative and the kids end up with fun quilts. I did enjoy the first meeting and hope to go again – they meet monthly which works for me. Take care.
