Round Robin, a Comfort Quilt, Princesses & Goats

Well, where to start with this post? How about with the SAHRR? It is coming together nicely with two more rounds to add on. (Remember this is the Stay at Home Round Robin hosted by Quilting Gail. This year marks the third year of the event but the first time I have participated.

Hourglass blocks were the choice for this round. Chris @ Chrisknitssews took us through making these symmetrical blocks. Of course it is up to each quilter how to use them. I made tiny hourglass blocks to utilize the HST’s that I already had. Then I bordered them with strips of batik to get them to finish at 4.5″. At first I was going to put them on the darker blue batik because the colors are so vibrant on the dark background.

However, when looking at the quilt top I decided not to put two dark blue rounds side by side. Instead, I placed the hourglass blocks with the turquoise blue batik. Maybe I will continue to alternate the shades of blue.

16 patch blocks on point

On to the next project. Sometime before we moved I saw a post on Instagram from a woman who wanted to give up some blocks to anyone who would make a comfort quilt with them. I offered and she sent me two sets of blocks. The blue and light brown 16 patch blocks were one of the sets. These blocks had been made quite some time ago but after trimming them and reinforcing seams here and there, I put them together in this simple setting. They look sweet and with the added border, the top is just large enough to be a cozy lap size quilt. I need to look through my yardage and find something for the backing but the rest of this will go together quickly.

Spring has arrived in central California. Julia is happily working with mama goats and their babies. She is having a really busy term and the time she gets with these little guys make such a nice break in her day. Those rolling hills in the background are so pretty!

Soaking up some sun.

My son and his wife took the girls to Disneyland for the first time. It was princess heaven.

I thought the variety of expressions on A’s little face were so funny.

Posing with a princess and holding their dresses just so.

Little sister decided she needed a full hug.

The girls had a quick cuddle while riding the monorail into the park. I love this picture!

OK – that is enough for now. Feels like I have lots to work on this week. Hopefully you are all involved in a project that is causing those creative juices to flow! Linking up with a few favorites. Check the out at the top of the page, under Link Ups.

Make sure to check out the Quilter’s Color Mixer event coming on March 30th. It is going to be a great opportunity to learn all about color and placement from some really talented instructors. For more details on the event, click here to read my previous post.

I love the bordered hourglass blocks and the turquoise border. I think that was definitely the right choice. So sweet of you to make a comfort quilt with the left over blocks. The girls had a fabulous time at Disney – so sweet and getting so big! Love seeing Julia with the goats. Snuggling with baby animals is always a nourishing time.

Nourishing is exactly the right word Kathleen. Time spent with animals is how she feeds her soul. And, yes, the girls are getting so big. It kind of makes me sad – it is happening too fast!! Big sister had her fist ski lesson yesterday. How can that be?

Your SAHRR quilt is so joyful – I love looking at it and seeing your progress. I like the alternating blue borders, so I think you’re on to something! Julia looks right at home and in her element – how fun to be able to snuggle all those babies! Of course, seeing H and A at Disneyland – how fun. I agree that A’s faces were too funny! Nice work on the orphan blocks, too! It will make a great comfort quilt!

Julia and baby animals – she is in heaven. She doesn’t understand my constant gravitation to any newborn *human* baby but she is exactly the same with all other animals….. 🙂

Thank you Yvonne. You do the same!! We got out in the yard to do some cleanup today. Only about 45* but dry enough to be outside. Have to mix it up now and then.

Hi Bernie! Oh, it sure looks like the girls had a great time at Disneyland. What a sweet picture of your little getting a big hug. I love your decision on how you used the different blues for the borders, especially this week with the hourglass block. Just a few more rounds to go! {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne

Yes – only a couple more rounds. My quilt is getting fairly large so I think the plan for this week is to make the flying geese but not sew them together. Then I can see what comes for next week.

Hallo Bernie, the way you give the hourglass little borders is so nice and this colors give the quilt movement in the very right moment. love the idea how you interpret the borders. I wished I am so far and not running behind.
Yeah .. Disney is great .. so much fun for the kids. We all love spring to come. Thanks for sharing the fotos.

Hi Eva – there is plenty of time. I like projects where the timeline is suggested but not mandatory. I have kept up with this project but that is highly unusual for me! Today no sewing happened because we have a break in the rain – this means we could do some projects in the yard. All these things to be done and not enough time to do them.

I have hit a desert spell in my sewing! But I have a plan for getting my sewing mo-jo back; I am going to cut out the pj pants that I have the fabric for. That should kick start me!
I love getting to see your lovely fabric choices and your works in progress; however, the best part of your sewing journey are the finished projects!
Your princesses are adorable! I especially liked the picture of them holding their dresses just so!
We had our 5 year old grandson yesterday. He was so fun! We made his favorite cookies and he was totally into it! He told me that he was sorry that I didn’t have any cookies for us. (I sent the finished ones home with him. But I made more for us. I told him that I would make more and he was happy that I would get some. Too cute!)

What a great day with your little guy. Next week H has some time off of school so we are hoping to have both of the girls for a night or two. Crossing my fingers for clear weather because they both love to be outside. This is great with us as long as it is dry. I can do cold but not a huge fan of being out when it is drizzly.
Start the pj pants – that will be a great project. Last night I was thinking I want to make something to wear. Not sure but maybe just a t-shirt?

      Have fun Torry!

Thank you Linda. I am going to work on some matchstick quilting – which always takes forever but is worth it – then my flying geese later this week. Enjoy your day!

You picked a fun and vibrant color palette for the SAHRR. You were also wise and limited the number of blocks you need to make. SAHRR is looking good. Love the princess pictures!

Hi Kate – I am limiting the pieces because:
      1. I am fairly slow when it comes to piecing so I can’t do tons each week.
      2. The colors I am using are bold and I think it would be chaotic with loads of pieced blocks.
      3. I am working on quilting another project simultaneously which means only so much time for each project, right?
It is a lot of fun though and I am happy to be participating in my first SAHRR.

I really like the alternating flue/turquoise borders. And the use of the hourglass as cornerstones. I still marvel at the visual effect of spools end to end instead of alternated.
