2022 is a Wrap

It is New Year’s Eve today. Lots of people are looking back at their year and thinking forward to the new year. When I think of last year it makes me tired. We worked so hard to get our house ready for sale, listed and then sold. Planning the move was done by my husband but yikes, it was a lot of work! Then settling into the new house, getting things set up and figuring out life up here. It certainly wasn’t a year for loads of sewing, at least not in the first half of the year. I made up for that in the second half of the year though!

Nine quilts finished.

The above collage shows the nine quilts I made. Some of them had been started before our move but most were started and finished since I got up to Washington. My two favorites are the snowflake quilt shown in the center and the bold patchwork shows on the lower right. But they were all fun! Three of these quilts were sent off to Mercy Hospital for their use with terminal patients. (By the way, if you aren’t aware of Mercyful Quilts, click on the tab at the top of the page. I love helping to organize lap quilt donations for them). After I made the collage, I realized I forgot to show one other quilt I finished so to be accurate, there is actually a tenth quilt!

Projects made in 2022

This collage shows a variety of projects I made in the second half of the year. From aprons to tote bags and placemats to teddy bears, I really had fun with these. I love having my sewing room organized and ready. When the mood strikes, I can shop the shelves and find something fun to work on. These sorts of projects keep me motivated. The variety is important to me in order to avoid feeling stagnant. Also, these smaller projects provide the satisfaction of a finish much sooner than quilting. My favorites here are the very spooky ghost costume and the two matching sundresses show in the center row. There are other items I didn’t photograph for whatever reason but those include another apron, a market bag for Julia, a nightgown, and a fabric toddler book.

Meadow Quilt for Nick & Jess

I did take a look at the top post for 2022 as far as the number of views and it was my post on the Meadow Quilt. This quilt is a beauty and I loved making it because it was so unusual. It is one I would make again because I can see it down in so many ways – a fall themed quilt with leaves, a winter themed quilt with dark night sky blues and silvers on the back ground and snowflakes for the collage. It is the perfect blank slate for creative collage. It also is fantastic for using up scraps.

OK – let’s look forward. Goals for sewing? Just to sew. Make things, enjoy what I am making, and try, try, try not to let the comparison demons rob me of that pleasure. (Instagram – I am talking about you!) Otherwise, no real goals. I have enough fabric in the sewing room to make hundreds of quilt tops. The roll of batting still has quite a bit left on it. I think the only purchases I (might) need to make are backings. But you know I will keep my eye out for thrifty ways to obtain backings – guild sales, thrifting, etc.

Goals for 2023? Hmmm…. I will lose 20 pounds, eat whole foods, exercise twice daily, live a totally minimalist life, read all of the classics, meditate daily, and keep my house clean 100% of the time. Bah ha ha ha ha! I have one goal. This is to find a way to volunteer in my new community. I had a few services in California that I enjoyed helping out with. Now that I am here and settled, it is time to find something to give some time to. I have a couple of ideas to look into – this is my only goal.

Finally, I have to say I am enjoying getting back into a blogging routine. When I closed my shop, a number of people asked me if I would stop blogging. While I certainly wasn’t nearly as active on my blog this year (only 36 posts), I do enjoy the relationships within this community and plan to keep it going. I like the writing, the journal that is kept here, and the conversations with readers and friends. Let’s keep the discussions and sharing going this year!

Wishing all of you the best in 2023 – here’s to good health, creativity, happiness, and connection!

2019 Planning

Being the list maker I am, it is a strong part of my nature to plan.  Of course plans don’t always go the way I hope but still, I try! Last year I set a list of a few goals I wanted to achieve with my business and I think it is helpful to take a look at those to see what was achieved before creating a plan for 2019.  Here goes! I set five goals for 2018.

  1. Continue to grow both of my shops.
  2. Work on my free motion and long arm quilting skills.
  3. I have three quilts in process right now and I want to finish them.
  4. I want to set a goal to send birthday cards to my family and friends.
  5. Most importantly, I need to work on acceptance of the limitations I experience due to my health.

Looking at these I think I did well for the most part.  First one was so rewarding!  I worked very hard to expand both my fabric and my pattern shops. I am very happy to see the growth that has happened this year.  I achieved 33% growth in sales for the fabric shop.  Also, the average order value increased from $21 to $27.  Looking at the increase in average order value is pleasing – it doesn’t look like a huge increase but considering the number of $10-$12 orders I ship, it really is.  There have been many more large orders which is great for the health of my shop.  The pattern shop did well too.  However I only have 6 months of numbers from 2017 to compare to 2018 so I didn’t get exact numbers.  But I feel like I have a solid base of customers for that shop and the orders are quite steady.

The second goal was not achieved.  Not even close!!  I did almost no free motion quilting and didn’t get to the long arm shop more than a couple of times.  So, that one still needs work!!

Goal number 3 – I finished two of the three quilts I had on the list.  Both my Twisted and my Scrappy HST quilt are done.  However, I didn’t touch the Ring Me project.  I do love this pattern and hope to finish it this year.

Number 4 seemed so easy.  But it fell off the radar by summer time.  I have such a huge family and really hoped to stay in touch more by doing this.  I will try again.  I sent off a card just yesterday.  Sending and receiving ‘real’ mail is becoming less and less common so I want to try this one again!

Number 5 – by far the most important goal of all.  I think I knocked this one out of the park.  I really tried to stay in the moment and not sink into that dark misery that chronic illness often causes.  My  neurologist and I worked diligently together and adjusted meds a few times.  The migraines are still constant (2-3 each week) but they are far less intense and I am able to deal with them better.  I am also much better about working within the limitations my health sets for me. I missed a quilt show that I was supposed to vend at (huge expense there but I just couldn’t do it). Also missed my sister’s 60th birthday party and was incredibly sad about that.  However, this is life.  And so many people out there have it much worse than I.  Keeping things in perspective has been really helpful.  So, yes – I rocked this one!

OK – Now to look forward!

  1. Continue to grow my shops.  I have a some fun things in store for you, my loyal customers and friends. I have some great giveaways coming your way, quilt kits that will be created and offered to you, and the occasional blogger bundle planned.  I will give details to you soon but it will be such a fun year!!
  2. Stay involved with charitable projects.  These make me feel satisfied and provide the perspective I need to always appreciate the blessings I receive.  Last year I loved working on my Spread the Love campaign with Amy at A Doll Like Me.  Now I am working with Mercy Hospital on the #MercyfulQuilts project.  Both of these are near and dear to my heart.  Again, you will continue to hear about these wonderful organizations in 2019.
  3. Finish UFO’s.  I have four at the moment (hmm….  I had three at the end of last year and here I am again!). I need to quilt and bind my Postage Plus quilt top (remember the hop for the Modern Plus Quilts book?  I have not yet finished my project!!). Also, I need to finish the Fireburst Mystery quilt.  The top is done and basted, so just quilting and binding remain.  Then I need to finish the Ring Me quilt. Finally I have a quilt top I had made for #MercyfulQuilts which I need to finish up. Also, since clearly this isn’t enough…  I am adding two projects to the quilting list this year.  I plan to make a whole cloth quilt for my bed and also want to make a Quilt of Valor for the #MercyfulQuilts project.  I have never made a QOV so I am looking forward to that one!
  4. Practice garment sewing. I made a number of things to wear this year.  Some were successes and others, not so much!!  But I have a couple of patterns lined up and will keep on sewing.  I love making clothes so this is a fun one to plan!
  5. Same as last year….  strive to accept my limitations caused by chronic illness.  One big adjustment for this year is I will not be vending at quilt shows (with the exception of possibly our local quilt guild’s show in May.) I cannot reliably plan to feel well on any given day.  In 2017 I had to forfeit my booth at one show and the same happened in 2018.  Between the two shows there was a loss of $300.  This is too much for a small shop like mine.  The work involved in these shows is quite a lot.  I have had to look hard at this and accept that it isn’t the right thing for me.  Kind of disappointing because I enjoy the shows and talking with all the wonderful quilters but such is life.  Making the decision has actually been a relief which tells me it is the right thing to do.

OK – that is it for this year.  How about you?  Do you have something you hope to work on or work toward?  Tell me in the comments!  Let’s encourage each other along the way.  Happy New Year friends!

Looking Forward to 2016!

Happy New Year everyone!!! We enjoyed a very quiet New Year’s Eve with just the three of us at home, a big pot of French Onion Soup and some lazy movie time. The perfect way to end 2015. Between my mom’s heart surgery and my sister defeating breast cancer, our family looks forward to a year of peace and good health.

Last year I wrote a post to set some goals for myself in 2015. I want to take a quick look at those and then set up a few for 2016. Here is what I had hoped to accomplish in 2015:

  1. Finish my three UFO’s
  2. Sew only from my stash
  3. Improve my piecing by slowing myself down while sewing
  4. Improve my photography skills
  5. Study up on quilt restoration

Here is what actually happened.

I did finish all three UFO’s, check! Sewing from my stash was a miserable fail. I was only kidding myself with that one. I think I lasted about ten days before I purchased fabric!  I believe I made huge improvements on my piecing – partially through slowing down, which made the process much more enjoyable. But even more than that, through joining up with Mari’s BOM, Classic Stitches. She chose blocks that had lots of pieces which forced me to really practice a lot. I used a lot of chain piecing with her tutorials and overall, my corners and points are improved. Thank you Mari!! I worked on photography by using a light box at times (mostly for product photos for my Etsy shop), taking a class with a friend who is a photographer and buying a 50mm lens which I absolutely love. The last goal, quilt restoration? Nope, never happened. Not once did I work on this, read about it or even look at the two quilts I want to restore.

The year seemed to fly by.  Here we are again with a fresh new year just ahead. I have a few simple goals, several of which build on last year’s goals.

  1.  UFOs – I have three quilts that are nearly done.  My Kaffe Fassett strip quilt top is finished. I need to sandwich, quilt and bind it.  The baby quilt that I made from the thrifted blocks needs the same; sandwich, quilt and bind it and then send it off to Project Linus. Finally, my Classic Stitches row quilt. The quilt top is not yet done but I have it nearly sashed. Then it needs to be finished as well.  So these three projects are at the top of the list.
  2. Improving my quilting skills. This will be done via a great group that I just subscribed to. It is called The Mighty Lucky Quilting Club. So named because the subscription is sold through Lucky Spool. This is a one year subscription where I will receive a new lesson and project, based on a certain skill, with support and inspiration from a different quilter each month. Some of the twelve awesome teachers are Amanda Jean Nyberg (Crazy Mom Quilts), Allison Glass (fabric designer/pattern writer), Angela Walters (Quilting is My Therapy), and Jacqui Gehring (Tall Grass Prairie Studio). These teachers and the rest of the group are sure to provide some really great instruction and should help me to really advance in my quilting. The cost is very reasonable at $5.00 per lesson or $50 for the whole year.
  3. Write some tutorials. I have only written two and would like to practice this skill. It is also a way of giving back to this community. I have learned so much from other’s and want to contribute.
  4. I will carry over the quilt restoration goal and hope that I will take the time to learn about this so I can work on the two quilts of mine that need restoration.

These goals seem reasonable, thus attainable.  I am especially looking forward to the monthly lesson from the Quilting Club. I have a feeling this is going to be a great way to learn and have fun in this community of ours!  What are you looking forward to in the new year? Whether you are one to set goals or not, I wish you all the best in 2016.
